News from the Coop
I am fortunate to live on acreage that, along with other animals, allows us to keep chickens. Our initial flock of 4-5 laying hens has transformed into 25-30 chickens ranging from tiny, colourful hens adorned with pom-poms to a huge white rooster.
Although this evolution has meant a decline in egg production, this assorted flock has given us hours of entertainment and are the inspiration for this series of short stories. I hope you find our chickens as entertaining as I do.
Miracle Saves the Day
‘Now this is the life,’ thought Miracle. She was sprawled out near the mandarin tree. Her head rested on the mulch, one wing lifted up to let the sun warm her tough, old skin. She didn’t have quite as many feathers as she used to and the sun felt wonderfully […]
City Chick
The eagle lands on the side of its nest on very top of a big gum tree. She has just ridden the warm thermal draughts hundreds of feet into the air, surveyed the open fields below before diving down onto a rabbit that didn’t have the time to be startled. […]
Epic Rooster Rap Battle

One Tough Chook
“Where are they?” Speckles marched back and forward in front of the closed door to the chicken coop. Just beyond the door was an orchard completely still and unscratched. She could almost see the bugs taunting her from beneath the soil. A wild dove landed right in front of the […]
She’s a Good Egg
Fudge was yelling at the top of her lungs. “I LAID AN EGG. JUST NOW. IN THE NEST. CHECK IT OUT. HEY EVERYONE, CHECK OUT THE EGG I JUST LAID. NOW. HAS EVERYONE HEARD? IN THE NEST. THAT EGG IN THE NEST, THAT WAS ME. I DID THAT. DID YOU […]
The Case of the Missing Eggs
Butterscotch’s day began like any other day. To her right she could see her three sisters and to her left, Ginger. She blinked her eyes and stretched her right wing and leg, fluffled her feathers, stretched out her left wing and leg, and then fluffled her feathers again. Butterscotch was […]
Who’s-The-Fluffin’-Man?
“When I start strutting, you girls sing: Go, go, go, go Tiger, it’s your birthday, gonna party like it’s your birthday. Or you could go with a chant like: Be impressive, be, be, impressive. Anything along those lines. Alright, here I go. Girls? Hey girls, where you going? Comon, […]
It’s Gunna Be a Good Day
(to the tune of Ween’s “Help Me Scrape the Mucus From My Brain”) I woke up just before the dawn I’d slept on the lowest of low roosts Check my wings, they’re nice and clean Somehow missed by all the poos Tiger’s eyes are lost in feathers Head tucked under […]
Him or Hen?
My mornings begin much the same as other people living on the land. As I rise with the sun my first thoughts of the day are for the livestock. The flop/klump sound of gumboots on dew covered grass is overridden by the already active animals. It seems that whatever time […]
